Get the facts on the quality of care at Resurrection hospitals

In an attempt to help consumers make informed healthcare decisions, AFSCME has produced a report that examines the quality of care provided at Resurrection Health Care hospitals. The report includes Resurrection's record on patient safety, patient care spending, public health citations and pricing.

Findings from the report include:

- Even as total revenues at Resurrection Health Care increased 146% from 2000 to 2005, spending on patient care supplies as a percentage of total revenue declined by 45% and spending on patient care salaries declined 35% during the same time period.

- Over the past three years, public health authorities have cited 395 deficiencies at Resurrection hospitals. During the same period, seven of the system's nine hospitals were placed on monitoring by the state for deficiencies so serious they violated the conditions of participation in the Medicare program.

- Resurrection Health Care had the highest markup of any Illinois health system. Among the ten hospitals with the highest markup in Illinois, three were Resurrection owned.

"The Record on Resurrection Health Care Hospital Quality 2007" is meant to help educate consumers and to improve the quality of care for all patients. The report, which examines Resurrection's eight Chicago-area hospitals, is based on data developed by healthcare purchasers, independent oversight groups and the government.

Frustrated with the skewed priorities at Resurrection Health Care, frontline employees have been organizing so that they may have a seat at the table to advocate for patients.  To date, Resurrection has refused their efforts to work together.
