--OUR RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW--
"Employees shall have the right to organize, form, join, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing."
National Labor Relations Act, Sec. 7
The United States Government guarantees our absolute right to:
-
Join and help form a union
-
Bargain collectively with our employer over wages, benefits, hours, and working conditions
-
Attend union meetings to discuss forming a union
-
Talk about our union on work time, as long as it does not interfere with patient care
-
Distribute union literature in non-patient care areas, both at lunch or on breaks, on or off hospital property
According to United States law, management cannot:
-
Interfere with, restrain, or coerce employees seeking to organize or join a union
-
Ask about our union activities, how we intend to vote, or if we have signed a union card
-
Fire, transfer or demote employees for union activity, or threaten to do any of these things
-
Threaten to lay off staff or close the hospital if the union is voted in
-
Bribe employees to vote against the union, or promise promotions, raises, or other benefits in an attempt to influence our vote
-
Tell us that unionization will take away benefits and privileges currently in effect
Our organizing effort is protected by law. Know your rights! Any of the above conduct is a violation of the National Labor Relations Act. If you feel your rights have been violated, contact a HEART organizing committee member immediately and call Rick Surber at (773) 792-2430 ext. 5762.
