The Church considers her task always to call attention to the dignity and rights of those who work, to condemn situations in which that dignity and those rights are violated..."-- Pope John Paul II Laborem Excerens

Resurrection Health Care is the largest Catholic health care system in Illinois.  What started as a single community hospital on Chicago's Northwest Side has grown into an eight hospital, 10,000 plus employee corporate health care concern with revenue over $1 billion a year.

Sponsored by two orders of nuns, RHC's mission draws on Catholic principles.  Yet with growth has come a departure from Catholic social teaching.

The Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World states tells us, "Among the basic rights of the human person is to be numbered the right of freely founding unions for working people.  Included is the right of freely taking part in the activity of these unions without risk of reprisal."

Yet employees report an atmosphere of fear, intimidation, and harassment inside the hospitals as Resurrection actively tries to disrupt its employees' efforts to organize.

The religious community has come together to support Resurrection employees.  Clergy and religious from all faiths have spoken out on the need for a faith organization like Resurrection to treat its employees with respect.

Father Lawrence Dowling, a pastor at St. Denis Parish, expresses eloquently the concern about the negative atmosphere Resurrection's actions have created among employees. "We have come together to support the core values that all our faiths embrace-the right of workers to dignity and a voice at work.  As the largest Catholic health care chain in Illinois, Resurrection Health Care needs to affirm the fundamental right of its workers to organize a union."
